Bridge Removal (2005)

In November 2005, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission completed their removal projects of the abandoned turnpike bridges near Breezewood, PA.  The western end of the trail was near the bridge that crossed over U.S. Route 30 and the eastern end of the trail was the bridge over Pumping Station Road, east of the Sideling Hill Tunnel eastern portal.  For safety and maintenance reasons, the P.T.C. commissioned the removal of these bridges.  With the removal complete, the abandoned roadway is much less accessible than ever before to vehicular traffic.  Having the ends of the old roadway more clearly defined should have fewer people trespassing on P.T.C. property.

Walking or bicycling west of the former bridge over U.S. Route 30 or east of the former
Pumping Station Road bridge is not advised.  Both of these sections of road remains owned
by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.  Trespassing in these areas may lead to
police intervention.  These areas are marked clearly.

The other stretch of abandoned roadway west of Ray's Hill Tunnel, the five miles in between the tunnels,
and the stretch east of Sideling Hill Tunnel are public areas and are open for visitation.

Motor vehicles are prohibited on ALL portions of the tunnels and abandoned roadway.
